DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM SAN DIEGO TO SAN ANTONIO DEL MAR
(FRONT GATE)
1) Freeway 5 or 805 South to the Border. [Note: Make sure you exit the freeway at Via San Ysidro, about a mile before the border, to purchaser Mexican Insurance, if you have not already purchased insurance.] Note when you get to the border, it is best to stay in the middle lanes.
2) At the border, there is a “red light” — “green light” random system for which cars the Mexican Customs officials will inspect. If you get a green light, proceed to (3) below. If you get a red light, you will need to try and weave your car into the inspection station on the right. Usually when you pull into the inspection station, they will usually just want to look into the windows and sometimes the back of the car/trunk. If you have something that they suspect is above the daily limits of duty free (amount varies, so you need to check with Mexican Customs if you are bringing high value items)), they may want to see a receipt for the item(s) you are carrying with you.
3) After you proceed through the border, get in the middle (3rd lane from the left) and follow the large overhead sign that says “Playas de Tiajuana Rosarito Cuota”. You will need to then cross over incoming lane (to your right) and get quickly to the far right to exit to the right
4) You will curve to the right and then merge with several lanes and end up on a 4 lane divided highway that takes you out of town and eventually to the toll road.
5) Proceed on the divided highway (approximately 3 miles) up, up, up a large hill: When you get to the top of the hill, get in the RIGHT lane. Shortly after you start then going down the hill, it splits at the bottom and you want to go to the right, again following the signs to Rosarito, Ensenada, Playas.
6) After going right at the bottom of the hill, you will merge into traffic and again proceed up another large hill… this time at the top of the hill get in the LEFT lane. The right lane will go towards “Playas,” but you will follow the signs to “Ensenada and Rosarito” to the left.
7) About a mile or 2 down the road you will see the toll booths. The toll is between $2.00- $2.50 depending on Peso/$ rate. They take US money and will give you change in US money if you do not have the exact change.
8) From the toll booth, it is about 6- 6 ½ miles to the exit to our housing development: San Antonio Del Mar and there are several signs telling you that you are approaching the exit. (Note you will see our huge housing complex which goes for at least a mile on the right side before you get to the exit). For a reference, it will be the next major exit AFTER (about a mile further south) the Real del Mar exit.
9) At the exit you will veer to the right and head to the ocean about a block where you will turn right and see in front of you a "guard" gate. They may ask where you are going and if you need further directions within San Antonio to your destination, they can help.
