Walk With Earth
IT ALL STARTED HERE!
Sunday, March 9th, marked the beginning of an 2 ½ year-long, epic journey for a US woman who plans to walk all the way from the US-Mexican border through Central America and South America until she arrives in Chile.. Rolene Walter, a member of the Religious Society of Friends, (better known as the Quakers) kicked off her Walk With Earth at the Monument Market on the border between San Diego and Playas.
Rolene is walking to raise awareness about sustainable practices for caring for our planet and to encourage people to see the earth as a sacred place. Rolene will invite local people along the way to join her in the walk through their own neighborhoods and lands. She is especially interested in having young people join the walks as a celebration of the earth.
Successful completion of the first 7-mile trek was celebrated in our very own south park in San Antonio del Mar. About 70 people, kids and dogs arrived happy, thirsty and tired by around 3PM. They were all delighted to have refreshing drinks of water, and to munch on orange slices and cookies.
You may think she’s crazy, but if her first trek is any indication, she may just make it! Her fellow trekkies, while physically fatigued, were very enthusiastic and spirited. Our Board President, Al Rosen, gave a speech of welcome and congratulations to Rolene and her companions.
One of our guards, Sergio, was inspired to write a beautiful letter of heartfelt thanks to Rolene, for her courage to demonstrate such a deep caring and concern for the earth, our home.

The Playas-to-San Antonio del Mar segment of the walk was sponsored by a local ecological education organization called Proyecto Fronterizo de Educación Ambiental A.C. They plan to start a water testing program to test for pollutants in the ocean and we have volunteered to be a test site. We are just waiting for those test kits and we’ll start testing the ocean water in front of our community. Stay tuned, we’ll let you know the test results!
