SAN ANTONIO’S JULY 4th CELEBRATION - A HUGE SUCCESS!

Families, friends and neighbors showed up to celebrate the 4th of July at the big pool in SADM on Saturday, July 5th.  This party was sponsored by the Homeowners Association and was open to all of the community residents.  We expected to have around 50 people show up for the party.  Much to our surprise and delight, the crowd swelled to over 150 people!

Through the generosity of many of your neighbors who contributed money, food items and supplies for the celebration, and a lot of hard work by the party coordinator, Carol Farrell, we were able to offer tickets for the low, low price of two dollars each.  Party-goers cashed in their $2 tickets for a complete meal consisting of a hamburger or hotdog along with a bag of chips and a soda.  For the adults, an extra ticket bought a can or cold beer and or a glass of wine.

As you can see from these photos below of “la linea,” San Antonio residents know a good deal when they see one!  San Antonio residents know a good deal when they see one!  People waited patiently while Patrick, Al, and John worked hard at the barbeque.  The hotdogs and hamburgers were in such great demand that we had to rush Pena off to the supermarket THREE TIMES in order to buy more food for the waiting, hungry people.

We were entertained by the charming young people from the Ballet Folklorico de Aztlan. This was sponsored by our neighbors Larry Wall and Doug Johnson.  Unfortunately, the dance troupe’s microphone system malfunctioned in the middle of the performance.  That did not defeat the dancers, nor the residents of San Antonio!  The beautiful dancers just continued dancing and the audience simply moved their chairs closer to the stage.  (We know what to do in Mexico when systems fail.  Don’t sweat the small stuff)   Swirling, twirling flashes of color, grace, charm and energy, with athletic prowess beyond their years — the young dancers gave a beautiful performance to an enthusiastic audience.  They took their final bows to much applause and great appreciation.

The final event, the Cake Lotto was also a huge success.  Twelve delicious cakes (many decorated appropriately in red, white & blue motif) were provided by members of our community.  Many thanks to Carol Farrell, Dora Alicia McIntosh, Liz Walton, Mickie Baker, Al and Sandra Rosen, Michele Scott  for their hard work and generosity!

The biggest question asked by many of the party goers throughout the afternoon was HOW DO WE GET SOME OF THAT CAKE?  Finally, tickets were sold for the cake lotto, the drawing was held at the end of the party, and 12 lucky winners went home with delicious, homemade pastel.

A great time was had by all.  Mother Earth was kind to us and kept the sun behind the clouds.  We learned a few things that day.  One thing we learned is that hamburgs and hotdogs (especially frozen ones) are not really as FAST as Mexican fast food (tacos).  ;>)
We learned that our neighbors come from far and near, are vastly diverse in our backgrounds and history, share a common love for the beach and our beautiful ocean, and care about the same things: our children, our countries, our homes and our community.

We also learned that we, the people of San Antonio del Mar, enjoy spending time together, appreciate the fact that we are privileged to live here, celebrate our exposure to dual nationalities, and desire to come together to unite our voices and our efforts.

Finally, thanks to Carol Farrell for organizing the event, Fabrizio’s Pizza for donating pizza to our tireless workers, and monetary donations received from Bob and Sylvia Dombrosky, Celia Roig, Alejandra Cital, And Carlos Urrea.
